CLIMBING AND TREKKING: For a trekker, East Africa is a world of highs and lows. From the snow capped peak of Mt. Kenya, to the desert plains of the northern Kenya. There is a range of treks from Sedate Hill walks through game rich ranges to high altitude routes on alpine slopes. There is a broad scope of destinations. For the more experienced trekkers a climb up Kilimanjaro could be another option.
MT. KENYA
Kenya is a country of high and low. This is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa. Its main attraction is the snowcaps at the Equator. Unlike Kilimanjaro, some rock climbing is required for someone to get to the highest peaks (Batian 5,199m and Nelion 5,099m). The trekker’s peak is Pt. Lenana (4,985m).
SIRIMON ROUTE
On the northern side of the mountain is Sirimon route. This has become the most popular route to many a trekker due to its gentle ascent to the main peaks. Wild life is in plenty and bird life is also abundant. Water is available in all the camps. Accommodation is either in the bulk houses or the basics campsites. One requires 3-4 days up and down.
CHOGORIA ROUTE
On the Southeastern side of the mountain is Chogoria route. This is the longest but most scenic route in this mountain. Wild life is in plenty in rain and inside the bamboo forest. Accommodation is only available at Meru Mt. Kenya lodge (2,950m). Camping equipment is required for the rest of the trek. One requires a minimum of 6 days 5 nights.
NAROMORU ROUTE
On the western side of the mountain is Naromoru route. This used to be the most popular route in the 80’s but due to degradation & the heavy rains, most of the trekkers shifted to other routes. Wild life is common & bird life is in plenty. Accommodation is in the bulk houses or basics camp sites. One requires 3-4 days to use this route.
BURGURET ROUTE
Sandwiched between Sirimon and Naromoru route is this rarely used but scenic route. The trek is in the thickest of the bamboo forest and the tussock grass, which makes it harder for the trekkers.Wild life is in plenty and bird lovers have something to smile about. Accommodation is basic camping and water is not easily available. One requires a minimum of 6 days 5 nights.
