Trip Highlights: The Islands of Lamu floating on the Indian Ocean are a living museum of history. Covered in white sandy beaches, palm trees, and crystal blue seas. This memorable outdoor adventure includes a tour of Lamu Island's historic sites, boat rides and a variety of watersports such as snorkeling & windsurfing.
Day 1 Fly from Nairobi to Manda Island
Take a motor launch to Matondoni village. On your way you will enjoy views of Lamu stone town, on arriving at the jetty of Matondoni you will be welcomed by the local kids. On the beaches you will see dhows being made. Matondoni has a long history of dhow building. Set up camp in the mango trees. Have a lunch on coconut mats. After which you will be issued with masks, Snorkels, and life jackets. After a traditional Swahili dinner there will be a talk by a local woman on her life.
Day 2 Kiwayu
Breakfast. Pack up camp and set up all the gear in the dhow. After a short safety orientation, we set sail to channel mouth. Stop at a sandy white beach for lunch and a swim test. Sail through the channel heading North to Kiwayu Island. Possibly sail through the night to a full view of the stars to the island of Kiwayu.
Day 3 Kiwayu
Set up camp at Kiwayu. The camp has a full view of the sunrise. The seaside of the island is totally deserted and you can have the beach to yourself. We can also arrange sailing lessons on smaller dhows and windsurfing on the inland side.
Day 4 Kiwayu
Sail down to Bottler Islands and snorkel in the bathtub this is a very safe and fruitful snorkel. Lots of fish found in the bathtub. It is a natural pool. Walk back to camp along the beach. Visit the local school and have football match with students. Swahili singing and dancing in the evening
Day 5 Kiwayu
Sail through the Mangrove channel to Matondoni. Clean up and deissue gear. Visit sailor’s families in their homes. Have assumptous banquet dinner.
Day 6 Kiwayu-Lamu Island
Up early for breakfast. Take a motor launch to Lamu. Set up at hotel and walk the narrow streets of the stone town. A place that has only 2 cars you too can enjoy tranquility of this living museum. Free day for shopping.
Day 7 Lamu-Nairobi
Visit the Lamu museum. See pictures of the dhows that were once there. Its significance as a base was for the Arabs to use for trade in Africa. There is an exhibit on Swahili culture. Fly out that afternoon to Nairobi.
